So, after a very busy semester (my excuse for not getting different material for bats), I decided to change course a little and try out some new clay bodies. I still want to aim for making uniform forms, but I may have to put off making bowls and plates–a whole complete set–for a while.

I went to my local shop and talked to the owner about what clay bodies he had in stock and what they were like. He pulled out fired examples of the clay as well so I wasn’t going in blind. The two I settled on were a speckled brown stoneware and a silkier orange stoneware. While it sounds like I didn’t branch out much, these two clays were very different from anything I’d tried and very different from each other! He said the one was “gritty is a good way” while the other was “silky in a great way” …. So we’ll see!
