This clay was similar to clay I’d worked with in the past in that it is stoneware, but the grit level was intense! It also didn’t absorb as much liquid which was interesting and new for me.
Here’s my first and second attempts at using the speckled brown clay:
I struggled at the beginning with how firm and gritty the clay was. Notice how I started with a sponge, which I don’t usually do, because I found I always needed more liquid. In retrospect, I probably grabbed the sponge to protect my hands from getting too torn up, but because I wasn’t used the the sponge, I ditched.
The speckled brown was nice and firm, which both made it harder for me to shape (with me inexperience) and made it hold its shape very well! “Gritty in a good way,” he said.
My hands are red and raw now.
