After a little research (a.k.a. Instagram scrolling) about how ceramicists ensure the same proportions for multiple pieces intended to be a set, I noticed a common tool being used. Check out this video demonstrating it …
Soooo I got calipers for my first attempt! Granted, I did not get the one in the video, but I didn’t need the lid sizing feature, at least not this time.
I first measured out 480g of clay and threw a basic shape I like for a 5-8oz cup. Then I used my new calipers (WOOHOO) and measured the inside width of the rim.
I then weighed out the same amount of clay three more times and threw the same shape, checking the width several times with the calipers, as well as the height with a good ol’ tape measure.
Et voila! Je pense que c’était bien fait 🙂
For my first attempt at throwing matching mugs, I was pretty stoked! And yet, the width of the bases was not accurate across the board, nor was the width of the walls.
For my second attempt, I think I’ll measure the width of the base inside the mug before I start pulling up the walls. Realistically, it’ll probably take a few tries, and this is just mugs, though I think this will certainly translate to throwing bowls and plates as well
